In the past twenty years, Botox has become a household name. The neuromodulator treatment that was initially used by the rich and famous for freezing facial muscles and preventing wrinkles now provides natural-looking results in a cosmetic procedure available to everyone.
At Radiant Reflections Weight Loss Clinic & MedSpa in Hattiesburg, MS, we offer Botox injections to prevent and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is among the most popular treatments patients choose to fight the signs of aging, and our team is committed to helping you see why.
You probably have questions if you’re considering Botox treatments for the first time. Here’s everything you should know about the celebrated injectable and why patients love their treatments.
Botox is a prescription injectable muscle relaxer. It works as a neuromodulator, using the active ingredient botulinum toxin A to smooth and soften the skin by restricting the contractions of facial muscles.
Injections of diluted botulinum toxin A into targeted areas interrupt signals between the nerves and muscles, halting muscle contractions. As a result, the repeated facial movements that form and deepen fine lines and wrinkles stop.
Botox and other neuromodulators treat dynamic lines and wrinkles. Dynamic lines and wrinkles develop from making certain facial expressions. For example, dynamic wrinkles may be caused by furrowing your brow when you concentrate or crinkling your eyes when you smile.
When the movement from muscles that form those facial expressions is weakened or stopped, the skin appears smoother, and new lines are slower to develop.
“Baby Botox” is the term for Botox when it is used for preventative purposes. Many patients begin their Botox injections in their 20s and 30s before lines and wrinkles start to form.
In these cases, our team injects small amounts of Botox into areas of the face where wrinkles frequently appear, including the forehead, glabellar lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet around the eyes.
Most cosmetic procedures require some degree of preparation, and while Botox is relatively straightforward, it is best to schedule a consultation before your first treatment.
We want all of our patients to feel comfortable with our team and their expertise before any cosmetic procedure.
While most patients are good candidates for Botox, scheduling a consultation allows you to discuss your aesthetic goals, medical history, and treatment options to ensure that Botox is the best course of action to meet your needs.
During a typical consultation, we’ll discuss the areas that cause you the most significant concerns. Then we’ll have you make some facial expressions to better understand your facial structure and where your skin contracts and pulls. This evaluation allows us to place your Botox injections precisely where they’ll provide the most benefits.
Some patients choose to have their Botox treatment immediately after the consultation, while others may schedule Botox injections for a later date.
When it’s time for your Botox injections, we’ll assess your face and recommend a Botox dosage to deliver the desired results. We’ll also take time to address any lingering questions or concerns and ensure you’re comfortable.
The treatment itself takes only a few minutes. We apply the solution in targeted areas, using a tiny needle to place your Botox injections precisely.
Botox treatments don’t require any downtime. However, we do advise that patients make some small allowances after their injections.
First, we ask patients to refrain from lying down in the first four to five hours after their treatment. Remaining upright prevents increased blood flow to your face, ensuring your Botox stays in the specific treatment area.
We also advise patients to avoid vigorous exercise or activity for the first 24 hours after their injections to reduce blood flow that could cause the solution to move from the injection sites.
Additionally, you should refrain from rubbing or pressing on the injection areas or wearing a hat or headband that adds pressure to those sites. If you’re concerned about bruising in the injection areas, avoiding alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before and after your injections is best.
Botox injections offer fast results. Early results from Botox treatments may appear within a few days of your treatment. However, most patients won’t see the full effects of their injections until 14 days after their appointment.
You can expedite the results from your Botox injections by incorporating facial exercises after your treatment, which studies show can cause your results to appear sooner.
Eventually, Botox treatments wear off, allowing the nerves to resume sending signals to the muscles and causing them to contract again. For most patients, Botox results last three to four months.
However, everyone’s experience is different, and some patients find their results last a little longer, spanning four to six months. Others may see movement resume within two months.
Many patients who undergo their first Botox treatment notice the effects last for a shorter duration than subsequent treatments. However, it’s important to remember that your experience and results can vary.
Everyone experiences facial lines and wrinkles eventually. But if you’re hoping to delay the development of wrinkles or smooth emerging lines, Botox is a proven and effective method to restore a smoother, more youthful complexion.
