Laser Skin Tightening Treatment: What to Expect

Around 80% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 have had or will have acne, and of those people, 1 in 5 will have scarring that creams and topical solutions will not solve. Acne scars are one of the many things that can leave your skin looking uneven, blotchy, and tired, affecting your overall appearance.

At Radiant Reflections Weight Loss Clinic & MedSpa, we offer skin tightening treatments that are non-invasive, allowing you to achieve a more radiant and smoother skin tone. Read on to learn what our skin rejuvenation treatment involves.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation: What It Is

The laser skin tightening option we offer is a skin resurfacing procedure that uses lasers to improve the appearance of your skin. At our clinic, we use radiofrequency energy and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy to treat the following:

  • Acne
  • Acne scarring
  • Facial and spider veins
  • Beard bumps
  • Blotchiness
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Large pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun spots
  • Age spots
  • Brown spots

Skin tightening with radiofrequency uses energy waves to heat your dermis — the middle layer of your skin. The heat stimulates collagen, which is the protein that keeps your skin looking firm and healthy. As you age, your body’s production of collagen decreases, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin.

Radiofrequency can also help repair sun-damaged skin. Exposure to UV rays can cause collagen fibers to break down, leaving your skin looking uneven. With radiofrequency energy, we can help you regain that collagen.

Intense pulsed light therapy, also called a photofacial, uses light energy to remove certain colors from your skin. This light energy heats the skin, allowing your body to get rid of unwanted cells, effectively removing certain skin concerns. IPL sends several different wavelengths of pulsating light, treating more than one skin condition at a time.

Some of the concerns treated by IPL therapy include:

  • Acne
  • Birthmarks
  • Stretch marks
  • Liver spots
  • Age spots
  • Discolored skin
  • Dark coloring from hormonal changes
  • Redness from rosacea
  • Freckles
  • Sun damage

After IPL therapy, your skin will be more even, making you look younger. Together with radiofrequency treatment, our IPL laser skin tightening treatment will stimulate the production of both collagen and elastin.

Skin tightening treatments are best suited for people who are healthy, do not have a skin condition, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding.

We advise waiting for this procedure if you have recently tanned using tanning beds, creams, or sunlight or if you use a retinoid cream. If you have very dark skin, IPL therapy may not be as effective, so we will work with you to find a better treatment option.

Optimal results come after four to six treatments spaced six weeks apart.

Preparing for Laser Skin Tightening Treatment

We will have a consultation to assess the areas you would like to improve. We need to know your full medical history, so let us know about any medications you currently take or have taken recently. Tell us if you have had other cosmetic procedures and what experiences you had with them, as well as how you react to sun exposure.

We will perform a physical exam, inspecting your skin and the treatment area. This examination of your skin will let us know how its tone and thickness might impact the results. By speaking with you about your goals, we will ensure skin tightening procedures are a good choice or offer other treatment options.

We advise all of our patients to stop smoking two weeks before a session and plan not to smoke for two weeks after treatment. This will allow your body to heal more rapidly.

Avoid unprotected sun exposure, as well, and do not get a chemical peel or collagen shots for at least two weeks before treatment.

On the Day of the Procedure

We perform laser skin rejuvenation as an outpatient procedure. Come to your appointment without makeup, lotions, or perfume. We usually apply a topical anesthetic.

For intense pulsed light therapy, we will rub a gel on your clean skin and apply the handheld IPL device to your body. For other options, we will direct the laser slowly over the area.

Depending on the treatment areas and other factors, the procedure can last between 30 minutes and two hours. We will apply ointment and dressings to protect your skin once we finish, and you can leave right after.

After Treatment

After a skin tightening procedure, avoid sun exposure. Even if it is not sunny outside, wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and use moisturizing lotions.

We will show you how to effectively clean the treatment area with water, saline, acetic acid, or ointments. You may have to wait a few days to wear makeup or perfume.

Your skin may appear brighter immediately after the procedure, with the results getting better as the days pass. It may take two weeks to see optimal results. Effects can last for years after you complete the treatment sessions, but they are not permanent. Together, we can plan for future sessions.
