The Most Popular Injectables on the Market (and What They Do)

Dermal fillers and injectables are safe, popular options for rejuvenating the skin and providing patients with long-lasting results. These long-lasting results include reduced fine lines, diminished wrinkles, and a smoother skin texture.

Facial injectables are also highly sought after for their ability to lift and contour the face, lessen the intensity of scars, and add volume to the lips. They are minimally invasive treatment options that are office-based and require little to no downtime. In addition, these fillers prevent the need for more invasive surgeries that do require downtime, such as eyelid surgeries and facelifts.

Popular Injectables and Fillers

While there are several different kinds of facial injectables on the market, there are four that are most often requested:

  • Botox®
  • XEOMIN®
  • Juvéderm®
  • Bellafill®

All four of these dermal fillers have a reputation for providing excellent results. Most patients wonder what the differences are among them and which one they should choose for their cosmetic injectables treatment. Speak to your medical provider about your aesthetic goals and medical history. In the meantime, here’s a breakdown:

Botox

The most widely known of the injectables, Botox is the first and only FDA-approved product that can treat and improve severe frown lines. This is especially true for lines between the brows, lines around the mouth, and for crow’s feet at the eyes.

Botox works beneath the surface layer of the skin to target lines and wrinkles that form from muscle contractions during facial expressions. When facial muscles tense, the skin folds and furrows. For example, a person’s eyes tighten and squint regularly and form crow’s feet at the outer corners. Over time, the wrinkles and folds in the skin become permanent.

Botox is injected directly into those small facial muscles to stop contractions temporarily. While the formula works and “paralyzes” those muscles, the skin has time to unfold and unfurrow.

Botox for Migraines

Botox is also used to treat chronic migraines. When treating migraines, 31 injections of Botox are given at seven sites along the neck and head to prevent headaches.

XEOMIN

XEOMIN is one of the most powerful facial injectables used to diminish the intensity of frown lines, especially between the eyebrows. Lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions are called “dynamic lines.” These dynamic lines tend to respond well to XEOMIN.

One of the active ingredients in XEOMIN (Botulinum toxin type A) is responsible for much of the success of this injectable treatment. It targets muscle nerve endings to prevent them from contracting during facial expressions. In the same way Botox works, XEOMIN also temporarily reduces frown lines by reducing muscle contractions.

XEOMIN is a prescription for injection into the muscles that can effectively treat even severe frown lines (glabellar lines) in adults. Patients can receive this facial injectable once every three months at maximum.

Juvéderm

The human body naturally produces hyaluronic acid to deliver and maintain nutrients and moisture in skin cells. As people age, the body’s hyaluronic acid production slows down, leaving the skin dry and less elastic. This increases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as the skin cannot “rebound” back into shape like it used to once a facial expression is relaxed. Over time, wrinkles and lines remain.

Juvéderm is designed with cross-linked hyaluronic acid particles injected into those lines and wrinkles. Juvéderm replenishes the hyaluronic acid in treatment areas, which helps restore the skin’s youthful appearance and health.

There are special versions of Juvéderm available for particular treatment areas, so your medical provider will likely customize an injectable plan for you according to your specific needs and aesthetic goals. Juvéderm is also used effectively to plump the lips and provide a more youthful, rounded appearance to the face.

Many patients use Juvéderm to fill in the cheek areas, around the nose and mouth, and on the forehead, as well. The product provides long-lasting results that remain highly visible for six to nine months on average. Juvéderm can also diminish the intensity of scars, including acne scars.

Bellafill

No conversation about injectables and fillers would be complete without including Bellafill. This is the only dermal filler that stimulates the body’s own natural collagen production to help patients regain and maintain their youthful appearance. Results can last for an impressive five years, too.

Bellafill uses tiny polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres contained within a smooth collagen gel base. When this gel is injected into the skin, it immediately reduces wrinkles and smile lines. As time passes after treatment, the body will use those tiny microspheres to create a framework. This framework is a solid structural foundation for skin production and stimulates natural collagen growth.

Collagen adds volume to fine lines and wrinkles, effectively reducing their appearance. Results are very natural-looking. Like most minimally invasive injectables, Bellafill does not require downtime after treatment, and you can return to your regular day after a treatment appointment for this injectable.
